Tedious subfloor. Omelette anyone?
So I’ve been continuing with cutting out the subfloor. It’s tedious. I’ve found the best tool for cutting the vinyl laminated 3/4 ply is the sawzall. The issue is the length of the blade requires me to be very cautious as I’m cutting to avoid making any unintended cuts below the deck… like wires, metal supports… the diesel tank…
I’ve been drilling holes and then “connecting the dots” with the saw to make small cutouts in order to see where I’m going underneath.
With one of the test drills I ran into some metal about an inch below the deck and I wasn’t sure what it was. I decided to get on the crawler and scoot underneath (since Shannon wasn’t home, I usually send her under the van, it’s dirty and scary under there… and a bit dangerous). Turns out to be a heat shield for where the exhaust runs closer to the floor, then drops back down. It was good to get underneath to scout out the territory, get a sense of where wiring harnesses are etc. I think drilling test holes and cutting out small sections is the best plan with looking for large areas that I can remove at once.
Turns out I won’t be the first to sleep in the camper. I found a bird’s nest above the passenger door. Then I noticed the egg.
The rainy and windy spring has limited some of the camper work but I’m hoping to get some solid days in over the next few months.
I built a router table for the shop which is going to be fantastic come build time for the camper. The dust collection on it works fantastic! Routers are notorious for making a mess and this setup is great.
